Garry Clarkson

Cinematographer, Director, Editor

Leeds-based cinematographer and documentary archivist, across journalism, photography and film. 30 years of experience working in higher education and photographic archives. Oral history Archive, BHRU in the 1980s before working as a newspaper photographer for Leeds Other Paper/Northern Star, with coverage of the 1989 book burning in his home city of Bradford, following the publication of Salman Rushdie’s controversial book The Satanic Verses,¬†published widely, including¬†Guardian pictures of the year and stills for various production companies and Channel 4 TV.

Garry studied film at the University of Westminster and MA in Documentary, at Newport, Wales. In 2020 Garry set up BMT Film as a co-operative resource for a collaborative community of musicians, artists and historians to tell their own stories. Currently Lecturer at Open College of the Arts/Open University whilst working on an experimental documentary about Leeds DIY Jazz promoters and musicians.
